Curriculum Overview

Children come to school as individuals with their unique blend of intelligences, personalities, temperaments, talents, interests, and learning styles. Our challenge is to create a learning environment that nurtures and supports all types of learners.

Our Overarching Goals:
  • instill a love of learning and a joy of discovery, artistic expression, and community
  • nurture and strengthen all developmental domains–physical, social, emotional, cognitive, and artistic
  • promote respect of self, respect for each other, respect for nature, and respect for the classroom environment
  • promote a sense of independence and autonomy
  • build a strong foundation of classroom adaptation skills so that children are well equipped to function as individuals and as members of a group in a school setting

To achieve our goals, we have designed and implemented a strong, rich, and creative developmental curriculum with major emphasis on learning through doing (hands-on learning), learning through play, and learning through the arts in a bilingual environment. The curriculum and learning environment have been inspired by certain aspects of Montessori and Waldolf early childhood traditions. They provide each child with varied ways and opportunities to experience, explore, and interact with the world around him/her in a joyful, playful, loving, and unhurried environment.

The classroom space is configured so that children can move freely between three different rooms, each staffed with a teacher. The space, materials and school routines are designed to support our curriculum goals and encourage a high degree of student autonomy. Each day, children have ample opportunities to be engaged with materials and experiences that stimulate learning in our major curriculum areas:

  • language arts and literacy readiness
  • math readiness
  • creative and social play
  • science and nature exploration
  • arts and crafts
  • fine motor activities
  • gross motor activities
  • tactile play activities
  • problem solving / cognition
  • singing / music
  • snack preparation and snack time
  • circle time

Highlights of our curriculum and teaching strategies include:

  • Curriculum themes and activities are based primarily on nature and cycles of the year. Each monthly theme revolves around one or more projects that integrate learning and builds skills across several subject areas. Examples of curriculum themes include Forest Life, Sea Life, Polar Life, Pond Habitats, Nocturnal Animals, and Pet Hospital. • Teachers meet each child wherever they are in their overall development. Through modeling, guidance, and teaching, they work with the children to stimulate their interests, build upon their strengths and bolster the areas that need development.
  • We define individual learning objectives for each child based on our classroom observations and baseline assessments.
  • A student to teacher ratio of 6:1 ensures a high degree of individual attention and provides daily opportunities for students to work individually with a teacher or in small groups.
  • The unhurried daily rhythm and structure allow students to explore deeply through practice and repetition.
  • Activities are designed to support different learning styles and to draw upon multiple intelligences.
  • Teacher-guided activities are well balanced with play and free choice activities.
  • A variety of both open-ended and structured work/play activities are offered on a daily basis.
  • Children play outside in natural settings every day weather permitting.

"At French for Kids, children learn and play in a warm and positive environment. The wonderful teachers give each child individual attention and support and encourage all children to respect and care for each other.
