French for Kids!

School Community

Our international school community is quite diverse, drawing families from the United States, Canada, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Lebanon, Egypt, Mexico, Germany, Nepal, Czech Republic, Japan, and Venezuela. Many of our students come from families where French is spoken. Many come from families where only English is spoken or where English and a language other than French is spoken.

We value the cultural diversity, talents and interests of our school community. We invite parents to enrich the curriculum by volunteering their time to do a special project or activity with the class. In the past, we’ve had parents doing cooking projects that reflect their culture’s cuisine, a dentist who conducted a circle time on dental hygiene, and several musicians who talked about their instruments and then performed for the class. Parents may also schedule time in the classroom in order to interact with their child throughout the course of a typical day at school. Parents are welcome to volunteer to help with certain curriculum activities throughout the year.

Birthdays are a family affair at French For Kids! Parents are invited to spend the morning with their child. They provide the special birthday snack and participate in the birthday ceremony at circle time by sharing a memory about their child from each year of his or her life.

The school hosts two family social events. At the Winter Celebration in December, families are invited to hear the children sing some songs that they have learned throughout the fall. The performance is followed by a festive snack including holiday cookies made by the students. In June, the school hosts a year end potluck picnic following another performance of songs learned in the second half of the year. Both events bring our families together to celebrate our warm sense of community with good food and lively conversation.

Communication

We pride ourselves on fostering open and timely communication with our parent community. We view our parents as partners in ensuring a positive school experience for their children. There are ample opportunities for parents and teachers to converse on a daily basis. We also encourage our parents to visit the classroom any day after pick-up to get a better sense of their children’s daily life at school.

A newsletter is circulated each month to provide information about curriculum activities and school-related news and events. Two parent conferences are held annually, one in the fall and one in the spring. Additional meetings can be easily scheduled by either the school or the parents on an as-needed basis.

At the end of the year, each child receives a “Memory Album” that has been lovingly assembled by the teachers. These albums capture the ebb and flow of the school year through photographs and samples of student work.
